Advanced Strategies
Want to dominate the Words90 leaderboards? Mastering the mechanics is key. A score of 100+ requires more than
just a good vocabulary—it requires optimal time management and tile usage.
Top Tips for High Scores
- Chase the Bonus: The scoring ramp is incredibly steep. A single 7-letter word (Base
score x 4 multiplier) is worth far more than several rapid-fire 3-letter words. Always look for ways
to extend your current word.
- Master the Freeze: Don't panic when you reveal a tile! Immediately select it to freeze
its countdown while you scan the rest of the board for matching letters. You can always deselect it
later.
- Hunt Suffixes: Look for common endings like
-ING, -ED,
-ER, and -S. Identify one of these early? Select to freeze them, then build
the root word using the remaining board.
- Shuffle the Core: Stuck with 4 fixed consonants and no clear path? Hit the SHUFFLE
button to mix up the center 4 tiles. Note: This clears your current selection, so bank what you have
first if possible.
- Listen to the Clock: You have 90 seconds. Listen for the music change—when the tempo
speeds up, you have 20 seconds left! Don't hold onto a complex word; start rapidly banking short words
to clear the board.
- The Vowel Rule: The game dynamically ensures there are always at least 3 vowels on the
board. Use this to your advantage: if you clear all the vowels, you know the next tiles you flip are
highly likely to be vowels.
